Tottenham’s Bryan Gil move bad news for Man Utd and Chelsea in separate transfer pursuit

Tottenham’s summer transfer window has begun to pick up pace with a move for Sevilla’s Bryan Gil now just a matter of time. After a chaotic start to the summer, Spurs finding their feet will delight the club’s fans, but Gil’s transfer to north London could be detrimental to some of their Premier League rivals.

The off-season did not start auspiciously for Spurs, who were without a manager as Daniel Levy’s search dragged on and on.

But after landing on Nuno Espirito Santo to replace Jose Mourinho, the club are finally getting business done.

That appears to be largely thanks to Tottenham’s new managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, who is the man tasked with reshaping Nuno’s squad.

The former Juventus director of football is spinning several plates at once as he tries to find the best deals for his new club – and it seems his approach is now paying off.

Tottenham’s first summer signing looks set to be Gil after the club agreed to pay Sevilla £21.6million (€25m), plus Erik Lamela, for his signature.

Kounde has long been linked with a transfer this summer, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in the picture, as well as Real Madrid.

It has previously been reported by AS that Sevilla would demand £60m (€70m) for Kounde, who is under contract with the Spanish club until June 2024.

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has a reputation for being a shrewd operator and the feeling is Gil’s departure will make Kounde’s less likely this summer, especially to a club which can’t offer Champions League football.

Whether any of the aforementioned clubs would have bid for him is another question, given United are focused on Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and both City and Chelsea are prioritising the addition of a striker.

Paratici himself has been in discussions with Sevilla over Kounde and reportedly offered to pay £25m (€30m) plus Davinson Sanchez for his signature.

That appeared a speculative attempt to sign one of the top-rated young defenders in the world, but a deal for Gil – and a departure for Lamela – is not a bad consolation prize.
